In the late 1990s, Linux was gaining momentum, but it was still often seen as a system for enthusiasts and administrators rather than everyday desktop users. That was the environment in which Linux Mandrake appeared. It became one of the most important early desktop Linux distributions because it made Linux easier to install, configure, and use.
Although the original project no longer exists under its first name, its influence lives on through several successor distributions, including Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, OpenMandriva, ROSA, and Mageia. Together, they form one of the more interesting family trees in Linux history: a story of technical innovation, corporate instability, community resilience, and multiple forks with different goals.
The Birth of Linux Mandrake
Linux Mandrake was created in 1998 by Gaël Duval. At the time, many Linux distributions were powerful but difficult for newcomers. Mandrake stood out because it aimed to be a more approachable desktop system.
Its original formula was simple but effective:

The name “Mandrake” led to a legal dispute involving the rights holder of the comic character Mandrake the Magician. Because of that conflict, the distribution gradually shifted from “Linux Mandrake” to Mandrakelinux.
That was not the only major change.
Financial Pressure and Restructuring
Like many Linux companies in the early 2000s, MandrakeSoft faced financial difficulties. It went through a period of bankruptcy protection and restructuring. Despite that, the distribution survived and remained popular for several years.
A major turning point came in 2005, when MandrakeSoft merged with the Brazilian Linux company Conectiva. After the merger, the company adopted a new name: Mandriva.
From then on, the distribution became known as Mandriva Linux.
The Mandriva Era
Mandriva kept much of what made Mandrake popular:

- user-friendly control panels

Of all the successors, Mageia is the clearest community continuation of Mandriva’s spirit.
It was founded in 2010 after major uncertainty at Mandriva, including layoffs and fears that the distribution could no longer be sustained in a healthy way. Former employees, contributors, and community members decided to create an independent project governed by a non-profit structure.
Why Mageia Forked
Mageia was created mainly because the community no longer trusted Mandriva’s corporate situation to protect the distribution’s future. The fork was about:

Why ROSA Split
ROSA grew out of Mandriva-era collaboration but eventually developed along its own path because of:
- regional market needs
- commercial product goals
- its own design and engineering priorities
Rather than simply acting as “Mandriva under a new name,” ROSA became a distinct platform.

When Mandriva as a company faded, another effort appeared to preserve the name and technical heritage in a more open form: OpenMandriva.
The OpenMandriva Association was established to continue development with community participation and support from parts of the former Mandriva ecosystem.
Why OpenMandriva Exists
OpenMandriva was created to serve as a direct community-based successor to Mandriva Linux itself. Where Mageia represented a clean break from Mandriva’s corporate instability, OpenMandriva aimed to continue the brand lineage more explicitly.
What Makes OpenMandriva Different
OpenMandriva tends to be more technically adventurous than Mageia. It is often associated with:
- a strong KDE Plasma focus
- newer software stacks
- experimental or performance-oriented build choices
- a more modernized continuation of the old Mandriva concept

ROSA
Best described as:
- commercially connected
- regionally strong, especially in Russia
- polished and distinct
Choose ROSA if you are interested in the branch of the Mandriva tradition that evolved into its own ecosystem with desktop and enterprise ambitions.
The Lasting Legacy of Mandrake
Even though Linux Mandrake itself belongs to an earlier era, its impact on Linux remains significant.
It helped establish the idea that Linux could be:
- friendly to newcomers
- polished on the desktop
- manageable through graphical tools
- competitive as a daily-use operating system
Many things users take for granted today were still novel or unevenly implemented when Mandrake made them central to its identity.
Its successors reflect the different ways Linux projects survive change:
- Mageia preserved the community
- OpenMandriva preserved the name and technical direction
- PCLinuxOS preserved the desktop-first spirit in its own way
- ROSA preserved and adapted the platform for a different market
Conclusion
